E39 – Punishment of wind & water
$1.049,55
“Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” (Matthew VIII, 24 – 26)
The full title of this engraving is: “Punishment of wind and water waves.” The gigantic proportions of the Jesus figure show that Jesus is dealing with forces of nature that exceed human forces. The boat is the church, turned upside down by the feeble faith of those who form it. The bowsprit clearly refers to the tower with the cross. The lightning draws the profile of the devil in the sky. Jesus therefore adopts a vehemently rebuking attitude, but at the same time that of calm and regained peace. The disciples can be seen around the broken mast, which represents the broken faith.
