E54 – The scribe who wanted to follow Jesus
€1950
“Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” (Matthew VIII, 19 – 20)
This engraving shows the contradiction of the answer to the question: “Master, where do you live?” Jesus stands before an abyss of light, which radiates through him. The other creatures in the engraving are enveloped in darkness. The tree is curved like a bow with the three creatures at the end. The scribe acts as the hand that Jesus was going to shoot like an arrow into infinity. The poor scribe torments his brain to escape his material darkness, but it is understandable that he does not succeed. The material darkness has him too strong in its grip. The hands of Jesus actually tell everything described above with a single movement.
