E67 – The rich young man
$1.051,70
“Jesus replied, “You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.” “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Matthew XIX, 18 – 21)
This engraving again represents a different interpretation of wealth and its unreality. In this composition, Jesus is the only material and organic. Everything else is only two dimensional, even the rich youngster. There is a saying that it is harder for a rich person to get to heaven than it is for a camel to get through the eye of a needle. There is also a reference to the idea that real wealth existed for the big capitalist model with a car as a luxury item and staff such as a doorman and coachman.
This work was made in Totoral (Argentina) between the 28th of April and the 26th of June 1939.
