E78 – The Pascha

“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew XXVI, 26 – 29)
The table of the last supper has the shape of a C, the C of Christ. Historically, the table was shaped like a horseshoe. All faces turn to Jesus, except Judas, who is already showing signs of remorse despite his betrayal. We also clearly see 25 hands of the 13 people present in this engraving. Delhez has strived to have them all speak their own language. The left hand of Judas counts, the right hand hangs resigned. It is that hand that has received the coins of treason and will throw them before the altar. Jesus looks at the hand because he knows what it will do. His hands say, “Behold my flesh, behold my blood.”
