FD59 – Raskalnikov and the craftsman
(Dostoyevsky Series 3 – Crime and Punishment)
“The man looked up…Murderer! he suddenly cried in a muffled but clear voice.” Delhez again appropriates some poetic freedom in this engraving. Raskolnikov often wears that strange hat, although in Dostoyevsky’s book he changed that hat for a hooded cloak after committing the murder. Delhez definitely didn’t want to sacrifice the character to the letter here.
This work was made in Chacras de Coria (Argentina) between the 28th of March and the 26th of May 1946.
