E32 – Healing the servant

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. “ (Matthew VIII, 8)

The actual title of this engraving is “The Healing of the Centurion’s Servant”. This engraving depicts the first remote miracle. Everything takes place before a triumphal arch. Legions dash beneath the arch. There is a clear reference to the famous building ‘Het Steen’ in Delhez’s native Antwerp, surrounded by forts and warships. Above the metropolis hangs a sword of Damocles formed by airplanes. At the foot of the arch we see the twelve apostles. By the servant one actually means the soul of man, so that the message here is in fact that not the servant will be healed, but the soul of man.

This work was made in Cocaraya (Bolivia) between the 25th of April and the 2nd of June 1936.
