E51 – The sick people at Bethesda

999,00

When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” (John V, 6 – 7)

The sick with their ailments (actually their sins) are here reflected upside down in the water. Jesus heals the man who has been sick for 38 years. Three opponents watch and prepare their plan. The mysterious self-assured man who appears in other engravings can also be seen here as usually leaning against a column. Between the columns one sees the temple and people humbly approaching or disputing themselves away.

This work was made in Totoral (Argentina) between the 24th of April and the 16th of July 1938.
