E70 – The 2nd temple cleansing

“It is written,” he said to them, “My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.” (Matthew XXI, 13)

In this engraving, which naturally reminds us of E29, the first cleansing of the temple, things take a worse turn than in that particular work. Not the merchants, but the priests form a street, a dreary street, after the holy of holies: an enormous safe, whose modern details glitter in the twilight. The whole refers to a trade in sacred things. The workman is expelled but moves away independently. Christ’s attitude is calm this time, and his scourge is already more symbolic, even a little abstract.

This work was made in Totoral (Argentina) between the 7th of June and the 28th of August 1939.
