“The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think? They all condemned him as worthy of death.” (Mark XIV, 63 – 64)
The three parts of the condemnation of Jesus are here represented by Caiaphas, the most guilty and who must therefore also appeal to his wrath which he must uphold in order not to succumb to the cry of his conscience and the doubt of the guilt of Jesus. Delhez has applied an inverted perspective effect here, so that the farthest figures are larger than those that are close by. It is Delhez’s aim in this way to emphasize the fantastic of condemnation and no less the absurdity of a condemnation of a God by his own creatures.
This work was made in Totoral (Argentina) between the 16th of December 1939 and the 28th of January 1940.
